Dear Parents, Students, Staff, and Community Members: I hope this message finds you and your families safe and well. Today, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced that remote learning in Illinois will be extended through the end of the 2019-20 school year. Although in-person learning has been suspended for the remainder of the year, at the Teutopolis CUSD #50 School District, I assure you our entire staff remains committed to learning and engaging with all students through remote learning, as well as continuing with our food distribution program. Like you, we are saddened by the reality that our school community will not be able to reconvene in person this school year due to this public health crisis. So many of you have worked so hard to learn and grow in both the classroom and in extracurricular activities that today’s announcement may feel like a step back. However, the final chapter of this school year hasn’t been written yet. These past few weeks have proven our school community is more resilient, more capable and more compassionate than maybe what we previously realized. I’m confident our collective strength will shine through during the remainder of the school year, and we will emerge even stronger. Having said that, today’s announcement will result in significant and multiple scheduling changes in our district. As this announcement about the end of the school year was just made by Governor Pritzker this afternoon, it will take us a few days to sort out the many schedule details, including notable spring activities, promotion, graduation, etc. We appreciate your patience as we work as a district to get information to you in the next several weeks. Please note, we will be holding our next packet pick up for the Remote Learning process on Wednesday, April 22nd from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at each student's respective school. Other upcoming packet pickup dates to note are May 6th, and our final packet drop off/pickup date as May 21st. These dates were pre-planned in anticipation of the Governor's announcement. If anyone needs assistance in obtaining their packets please contact the Unit Office and we will assist. Please continue to contact teachers if you need clarification regarding packet materials or online assignments. We will continue to provide Grab and Go Lunches for free for any students ages 18 and under through May 26th. If you wish to add your child/children as participants please fill out the survey on the district website or contact the Unit Office at 217-857-3535. I know this is not the school year that any of us imagined, but I want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we have dealt with this unprecedented situation together. This period of Remote Learning offers us new ways to learn and grow, and out of this Pandemic, we will emerge stronger. Plans will be underway soon for the return to in-person learning next school year. It’s important we continue to work together and support our students. I can't thank you enough for all that you are doing as we all work together through this. Sincerely, Deborah Philpot, Interim Superintendent, Teutopolis CUSD #50

District Update to Parents, Students, and Staff: Good afternoon! Just sending out a quick reminder of a few items. Our next packet pick up for grades K-12 is tomorrow, Tuesday, April 14th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at your child’s respective school building. Please turn in your child’s previous packets during this time. If you cannot make this date and time please leave a message at your child’s school or email the teacher and we can make other arrangements per each student. We continue to offer Grab and Go Lunches to any children in the district ages 18 and under. If you would like to participate in this program please fill out the survey online or contact the Unit Office at (217)857-3535. The high school will be sending out an email note regarding high school boys cleaning out their PE lockers. Please check your email for a note from Monica Kremer regarding this process. Mr. Beck, THS Principal sent an email to all high school students regarding the grading policy for the final quarter of the year. Please ask your child to share this email with you. If you have any questions after reading the email sent to your child please contact your child’s teacher and/or Mr. Beck. As of today our return to school date is May 1st. We will keep you posted as the Governor keeps us posted. We are fully committed to trying to make the best of this situation when it comes to featured Spring events such as high school graduation. Special events such as this may need to be rescheduled to a future date but we will need to await the Governor’s orders to make those plans. In closing, please know that we continue to be so grateful for your patience and assistance during this process. Our staff is continually working to provide what they believe to be the most effective remote learning experience for every child and their family. We also know that it continues to take a tremendous amount of time and energy from everyone involved. Please do not stress over this. If you have concerns please let your child's teacher know and they can try to accommodate. We are continually working on "best practices" during this process also and want you to know that we do not want this to be frustrating for anyone. If we can help, please let us know. Thank you! Respectfully, Deborah Philpot, Interim Superintendent

Dear Staff and Community at Teutopolis CUSD #50, On Friday, March 20th, Governor Pritzker issued an executive order requiring residents to “stay at home” effective Saturday, March 21 at 5:00 pm, through the end of April 7. As part of the Governor’s order, he announced that school will remain closed, with a new tentative reopening date of April 8. We recognize that this development may raise questions about the impact on students, staff, and families as well as the school’s vital role of providing meals to students and families while schools are closed. We anticipate further guidance and details from the Illinois State Board of Education next week. During this stay at home order, essential school personnel may still report to work as long as they are practicing social distancing. We want you to know the governor’s office has assured school districts that school personnel involved in providing meals will not be in violation of the governor’s executive order and that we can, and should, continue with our Grab and Go lunch program, which has had a tremendous impact in making sure our students are not going hungry while school is closed. In addition, the governor has made it clear that, while he’s serious about using social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19, he wants residents to still be able to work, shop at grocery stores, put gas in their cars, take walks outside and get medication from the pharmacy. Rest assured, we are committed to doing our best to provide meals and deliver continuity of education. Please use this opportunity to focus on staying safe and helping to slow the spread of the virus. As always, thank you for your patience and support as we all work through the COVID-19 Pandemic. As you have seen, this situation is evolving rapidly. As events unfold, we will continue to communicate in a timely and transparent manner. Further details regarding continuity of educational opportunities and instruction will be forthcoming. Sincerely, Deborah Philpot, Interim Superintendent

We would like to take this time to thank the school board, administration, parents and students for being so amazing. We also want to thank all the wonderful faculty and staff we have the absolute privilege of working with. You folks are the BEST!! These last few days have been a whirlwind and the next few weeks will be trying to say the least. But there is no doubt that we will all get through this and will definitely be stronger because of it. We would especially like to thank all our students at the high school. We have witnessed over and over how these kids help each other, protect each other, and rise up when they need to. As educators, moms, and one soon-to-be grandma, it gives us great comfort in knowing that our world is surrounded by such amazing young people. Thank you for this. Good evening! As was previously communicated, Teutopolis School District will be closed from Monday, March 16 through Monday, March 30. This includes the cancellation of all extra-curricular activities and practices, social events and other school-related gatherings. At current, we plan to reopen on Tuesday, March 31. As the situation evolves day to day, the reopening date could change. We will continue to keep you informed as more information becomes available. The Teutopolis School District will work to prepare learning opportunities for students via learning packets and/or online opportunities. Educational resource links will also be provided via teaching staff. Teutopolis faculty will finalize preparing learning opportunity packets and materials during Monday’s teacher inservice. Parents and or students may pick up their learning opportunities at their respective school on Monday evening, March 16 between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. These packets are expected to be completed in full by the students. Parents are encouraged to guide their students but encourage your child to complete the work themselves to the degree that they can. We know this is not a perfect system but this will allow us to continue to provide education to your students so as to complete this school year both academically and in a timely fashion. Please note that optional food service opportunities will be sent out at a later date.

Dear Parents and Guardians, I am writing to address an incident today at Teutopolis High School involving police and assure you that your child is safe and not in danger. The police were at the high school because the district notified law enforcement of a possible inappropriate social media contact with a student and adult male. The adult male — who is not an employee of Teutopolis School District and does not reside in this area — was taken into custody in the parking lot by police. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and I want to assure you that at no point did the adult male come into contact with any other students at the high school today. Because this is an ongoing criminal investigation, I cannot comment further at this time. A potential serious situation was avoided today due to several of our students stepping forward with information and looking out for their fellow students. We are grateful for our students looking out for one another! Thank you for your support of our students. Sincerely, Deborah Philpot Superintendent

Good afternoon! Teutopolis CUSD #50 will hold an informational session for Teutopolis High School parents regarding any questions or concerns they might have regarding the asbestos abatement project starting January 13, 2020. The informational session will be held Monday, January 6th at 9:30 a.m. in the high school Media Room. Attendance is not required but we want to allow the opportunity for any questions or concerns regarding the project to be addressed. There will be a presentation by our environmental consultant with question and answer time allotted. Media Release Regarding Phase II Project at Teutopolis High School Submitted by Deborah Philpot, Interim Superintendent, Teutopolis C.U.S.D. #50 Teutopolis CUSD #50 is pleased to provide a statement on the upcoming asbestos abatement project at Teutopolis High School. First and foremost, as Superintendent I hold paramount the Safety, Health, and Welfare of the public and certainly of our children and staff who attend Teutopolis High School. To believe otherwise would undermine the spirit and intent of Section 105 ILCS 5/3-14.22 of the Illinois School Code which I am endeared to uphold. The asbestos work is the first order of work that will occur this year to allow for the timely demolition and rebuilding of the older parts of our school. The planning for this phase actually started in June of 2019 after the asbestos abatement of a very similar project in two of our classrooms. The Asbestos Abatement Plan (Plan) for 2020 was designed by an Illinois Licensed Professional Engineer, publicly bid-out per the Illinois Complied Statues, and awarded to a contractor licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to perform work of this nature in public and private schools in Illinois. The project targets the oldest building on our campus, a 1929 structure which has reached its life expectancy and deteriorated to the point that rehabilitation would be costly and not in line with the Building Program implemented by our Architect. The Plan that the contractor will follow will be enforced by an IDPH licensed third-party representative acting on behalf of the District, the Architect, and the Department of Public Health; and its enforcement will keep our buildings clean and safe for our community and children.

Good evening! This is Deborah Philpot Unit 50 Interim Superintendent. I wanted to let you know that we have received concerns of a potential threat brought to the administration’s attention. Earlier today at Teutopolis High School a school resource officer was brought in to assist in interviewing students to determine any actions the district should take and if there was a credible threat. After a thorough investigation process including input from the resource officer we did not determine any evidence that a credible threat existed. However the district will continue to be on alert to ensure the safety of all students.

Emily Zumbahlen, currently a 7th grader at Teutopolis Junior High, submitted the winning design as a 6th grader! She had to create an original design along with a saying or slogan, which was “Take Flight with Books.” For winning, she received an autographed book and 30 static stick decals with her design; she was also honored during a luncheon at the annual Illinois Reading Council Conference where her parents and brother joined her. Congratulations to Emily on a job well done!! Below is a picture of the decal created by Emily Zumbahlen.
