THS March Students of the Month are Cotton and Deters

The Students of the Month for March at Teutopolis High School were recently named. They are Wittni Cotton and Mitchell Deters. For each month during the school year two upperclassmen are nominated by their teachers and then selected by a committee of faculty members based on their participation and their dedication to Teutopolis High School. In addition, these students have done well in either academics, sports, leadership, and/or extracurricular activities. Wittni Cotton, daughter of John and Shelli Cotton, is a senior at THS. During Wittni’s junior year she organized fundraisers for remodeling the THS library. Currently, she is the chairman of the venue committee for the 2018 Effingham CEO Experience. Wittni has participated in Volunteens (3 years), InTouch (2 years), Drama Club (2 years), Band (4 years), Jazz Band (3 years), and Varsity Club (1 year). Cotton has also been a member of the pomerettes for 4 years. Wittni has obtained several awards during high school. She was named Rookie of the Month her freshman year. She competed in the Illinois Drill Team Association- Mattoon Regional Miss IDTA Dance where she placed 1st, a qualifying score for state finals. She was part of the IDTA-Dance Soloist Preliminaries where she a score that landed her in a top ten spot out of 55 soloists, advancing her to state finals where she received 6th place. Wittni’s hobbies include dancing, reading, working out, spending time with friends and and hanging out with her family, including her dogs. Wittni plans to attend SIUE majoring in Dance Theater. She plans to pursue a career as a performer, choreographer, and teacher. When asked what motivates her, Wittni replied, “My passion and love for dance, my parents, Mark Stewart, and my best friend, Christian Deters.”

Mitchell Deters, son of Nicholas and Nancy Deters, is a junior at THS. Mitchell has been involved in Spanish Club (2 years), Volunteens (1 year), Varsity Club (1 year) and National Honor Society (2 years). Mitchell has been a member of the Teutopolis Tennis team for 3 years.  Deters has received the Best Sportsmanship Award for tennis, placed 2nd in singles tournament, and has been on the honor roll all three years. In his spare time, Mitchell enjoys playing with his cats and dogs, scrolling through social media, and hanging out with friends. In the future, Mitchell plans to attend college, major in education, and move to the coast. Mitchell talked about his family and how they are his motivation. “My dad is a hard working man who never complains. My siblings are great role models and encourage me to stay positive no matter what life throws my way.
